The used-EV market does not only have a pricing problem. It has a proof problem.

A shopper can see the mileage, vehicle history, equipment and asking price. But the most expensive and least understood component—the high-voltage battery—is usually reduced to a dashboard range estimate or a salesperson’s reassurance that it “checks out.”

That is not enough for a buyer who knows an out-of-warranty battery repair could be expensive.

Dealers need a repeatable way to evaluate battery condition during appraisal, use the result in the buy decision and then display understandable battery information on the vehicle detail page. The goal is not to make every used EV look perfect. The goal is to replace uncertainty with evidence.

The PPO verdict: Voltest currently provides the most direct appraisal-to-VDP workflow of the tools reviewed. Recurrent is the strongest consumer-education and real-world range layer. Midtronics is the strongest service-department platform, but it is not primarily a retail VDP certificate. Lyteflo may become the most complete EV merchandising suite, but dealers should verify the present availability of its battery-report product before signing a contract.

The 2026 used-EV gross opportunity

Cox Automotive raised its 2026 U.S. used-retail sales forecast to 20.4 million vehicles. Cox does not publish a national dealer retail-gross forecast by fuel type, so PPO built the following scenario by applying multiple dealer group’s fuel mix and gross-per-retail-unit results to Cox’s national volume forecast.

In the source dealer data, EVs represented 1,315 retail sales and were projected down 21.2% year over year. Yet they still generated approximately $4.1 million in total gross, with average front gross of $1,464, back gross of $1,690 and total gross PVR of $3,154.

That is the important operating point. EV volume can be under pressure while individual EV transactions still produce meaningful gross. The risk is not simply that an EV will make less money. The greater risk is acquiring the wrong unit, discovering battery concerns after purchase or allowing an otherwise good unit to age because the VDP does not answer the buyer’s biggest question.

Projection methodology and limitations

This is a PPO scenario, not a Cox Automotive fuel-type or gross-profit forecast.

  • Cox supplies the 20.4 million national used-retail volume forecast.
  • The fuel mix and gross PVR assumptions come from multiple dealer group’s results.
  • Projected units equal national volume multiplied by the sample fuel share.
  • Estimated gross equals projected units multiplied by the sample’s total gross PVR.
  • The sample may not represent the national market. Brand mix, geography, price band, accounting practices and F&I penetration can materially change the result.
  • “Electric” should be validated against the source system’s fuel coding. BEVs and plug-in hybrids should not be combined unless the dealership intentionally uses that definition.

The projection is useful for sizing the opportunity. It should not be treated as a precise industry forecast.

Why battery health belongs on the EV VDP

Cox Automotive’s consumer-and-dealer research found that 81% of consumers were very or somewhat interested in a stand-alone battery-health report, while 63% of dealers were only slightly familiar or not familiar at all with battery diagnostic tools. That creates an information gap dealers can close.

Cox also found in an earlier Manheim battery-health pilot that higher battery-health scores were associated with 1% to 4% higher wholesale transaction prices, averaging 2.4%. That finding does not guarantee an equivalent retail-gross increase. It does show that the market can assign value to credible, VIN-specific battery information.

A battery report can help at three points in the inventory cycle:

  1. At appraisal: identify battery risk before the ACV is finalized.
  2. At pricing: distinguish a verified vehicle from an apparently similar unit with unknown battery condition.
  3. On the VDP: answer the range, degradation and warranty questions before uncertainty becomes an objection.

A battery certificate will not rescue a poorly bought or overpriced EV. It can, however, keep a good unit from being treated like an unknown one.

What a dealer-grade EV battery report should include

Do not buy a system only because it produces an attractive badge. Ask what data supports the badge and how the result enters the retail workflow.

A useful report should show as many of the following as the vehicle makes available:

  • VIN, mileage, test date and state of charge at testing
  • High-voltage battery state of health or remaining capacity
  • Estimated present-day range, with the assumptions explained
  • Cell or module imbalance and relevant fault indicators
  • Charging or cycle information when available
  • Remaining factory battery-warranty information
  • Supported makes, models and model years
  • A plain-language shopper explanation
  • A shareable report, VDP widget or inventory-feed integration
  • Clear limitations explaining whether the result is measured, calculated, modeled or inferred

The report should also be recent. A strong operating standard is to test at acquisition or initial inspection and retest when the vehicle has undergone battery-related service, significant software changes or an extended aging period.

Best for: Dealers that want one workflow from trade appraisal to an EV battery report displayed on the SRP or VDP.

Voltest is the most direct fit for the use case PPO set out to solve. Its professional kit connects through the vehicle’s OBD2 port, pulls available battery-management-system data and produces a customer-friendly report. Voltest advertises a test time of approximately two minutes and includes metrics such as state of health, charge cycles and cell imbalance when supported by the vehicle.

The retail advantage is that the result does not have to remain in a service file. Voltest offers SRP and VDP integrations that can display battery health, estimated range, charging information, warranty status and test-backed insights on the listing.

The professional kit was publicly listed at $429, but report generation and dealer integrations require an active subscription with dealer-specific pricing.

Best for: Dealers that want to make the EV VDP easier for a shopper to understand.

Recurrent approaches the problem through connected-vehicle and real-world data. Its dealer module can display realistic range, expected future range, charging time and ownership-cost comparisons. Recurrent says the module can be added to a dealer website with one line of code and supports most major EV and plug-in-hybrid brands.

For vehicle owners, Recurrent connects to supported vehicles through active connected-services accounts and analyzes multiple readings over time. That makes it different from a quick OBD appraisal tool. Recurrent is strongest when the dealer’s primary objective is consumer education and the reduction of range and charging uncertainty.

3. Midtronics: best for service departments and high-voltage battery work

Best for: Franchise dealers, large groups and EV service operations that need technician-level high-voltage battery diagnostics, module work, balancing, depowering or rescue charging.

Midtronics is a major battery-service equipment company with a broad xEV product line. Its tools include systems for high-voltage pack service, module balancing, depowering and rescue charging, with data-management capabilities through its BMIS platform.

That makes Midtronics highly relevant to EV readiness—but it is not a direct substitute for Voltest or Recurrent. The core Midtronics value proposition is safe, technician-led diagnosis and service. A dealer considering Midtronics should begin with the service operation it needs to perform, the OEM requirements involved and the training and safety processes required.

Best for: Dealers that want battery information combined with EV range, charging, incentives, fuel savings and ownership-cost merchandising.

Lyteflo’s broader value proposition is compelling. Its platform is designed to turn a standard vehicle detail page into an EV-specific shopping experience. Public product information describes fuel and maintenance savings, incentives, charging information, EV attributes and personalized ownership reports.

Lyteflo also describes a Quick Battery Test that uses an OBD2 device and produces remaining capacity, estimated useful life and real-world range information. However, the same public site repeatedly labels its Certified Battery Reports as “Coming soon.” Dealers should therefore verify which battery-testing features are commercially live, which vehicles are supported and whether a production VDP integration is available before making a selection.

Which EV battery tool should a dealer choose?

The right answer depends on where the dealership’s confidence gap exists.

Choose Voltest if:

  • Used-car managers need a fast test during appraisal.
  • The store wants VIN-specific battery proof carried onto the SRP or VDP.
  • The process must be simple enough for appraisers, used-car managers or service writers.

Choose Recurrent if:

  • The VDP does not explain realistic range, charging or ownership economics.

A tool only creates value when it changes the operating process.

Step 1: Test before the final ACV

Run the battery test before the used-car manager commits to the number whenever the VIN is supported. If the test cannot be completed, treat the missing information as an appraisal risk—not as proof that the battery is bad.

Step 2: Define decision bands

Do not let every appraiser interpret the report differently. Establish store rules for:

  • Acceptable state-of-health ranges by age and model
  • When a warning requires OEM diagnosis
  • When battery uncertainty requires an ACV adjustment
  • When the store will retail, wholesale or decline the vehicle

The exact thresholds should be developed with the testing provider, the OEM and trained service personnel. A single universal state-of-health cutoff is not appropriate for every model.

Step 3: Attach the report to the stock record

The report should follow the VIN through appraisal, inspection, pricing and merchandising. Do not leave it in a technician’s email or a disconnected app.

Step 4: Put the proof on the VDP

Display the report or a clear battery-health summary near the price, mileage and vehicle-history information—not at the bottom of a generic description. Include the test date and a link to the full report.

Step 5: Train salespeople to explain, not overpromise

The sales team should be able to explain state of health, current estimated range, remaining warranty and the limits of the report. They should never imply that a battery report guarantees future performance.

Step 6: Measure the result

Track certified versus non-certified EVs on:

  • VDP views and lead conversion
  • Days to first lead
  • Days to sale
  • Front gross and total gross PVR
  • Price changes before sale
  • Appraisal-to-purchase rate
  • EV-related objections and return concerns

That is how a dealer learns whether battery transparency is creating measurable retail value.

What a battery certificate cannot do

A battery report is evidence—not a warranty, a complete EV inspection or a substitute for disciplined inventory management.

It does not automatically verify:

  • Future battery performance
  • Every internal cell or module condition
  • Charging-port operation under every condition
  • Thermal-management performance
  • Open recalls or software campaigns
  • Collision-related high-voltage damage
  • The condition of the 12-volt battery
  • Whether the vehicle is priced correctly for the active retail market

Dealers still need a complete mechanical and safety inspection, an EV-specific road test, recall verification, charging test and an appropriate OEM diagnostic process when faults or abnormal results appear.

 

Frequently asked questions

What is EV battery state of health?

State of health generally expresses current battery capacity or performance relative to the battery when new. The exact calculation varies by vehicle and testing provider, so dealers should ask whether the result is directly reported by the vehicle, calculated from BMS data or modeled from other inputs.

Is a battery-health report the same as a warranty?

No. A report documents measured or estimated condition at a point in time. It does not guarantee future capacity or replace the OEM battery warranty. If a vendor offers a separate protection plan, evaluate its coverage, exclusions, administrator and claims process independently.

Should every used EV have a battery report on the VDP?

That should be the operating goal whenever the model is supported and the report is reliable. If a report is unavailable, clearly disclose what was and was not tested rather than presenting a generic “battery checked” claim.

How recent should the test be?

Test at acquisition or initial inspection. Retest after battery-related service, material software changes or a long aging period. Always display the test date so the shopper understands when the data was collected.

Can the dashboard range estimate replace a battery test?

No. Dashboard range can change with recent driving, temperature, climate-control use and state of charge. It is useful context but not a consistent substitute for a documented battery-health evaluation.

Does a battery test replace an EV inspection?

No. Dealers should still evaluate the charging system, 12-volt battery, thermal management, diagnostic trouble codes, recalls, tires, brakes, underbody and collision history.
