# The Wholesale Market Is No Longer Rewarding “Close Enough”

**The wholesale market is no longer rewarding “close enough.”**

For much of the last several years, limited supply allowed average vehicles to bring strong money. Buyers often had to stretch because the next acceptable unit might not appear for several lanes—or several days.

That is beginning to change.

Black Book data reported for the week ending September 19 showed auction conversion falling three points to 58% while wholesale values declined 0.69%. Trucks and SUVs fell 0.77%, and cars declined 0.45%.

The important signal is not simply that values moved down. It is that additional supply is giving buyers enough choice to become more selective.

Clean-condition, clean-mileage, well-equipped, retail-ready vehicles are still attracting competition. Average examples are increasingly being left behind—or sold only after the price recognizes the added risk.

## The market is widening the gap between similar vehicles

[Wholesale pricing](https://www.profitablepre-owned.com/blog/wholesale-prices-are-sliding.-heres-how-to-win-the-next-60-days) is often discussed as though every vehicle inside a segment moves together. The current market is showing why that assumption is dangerous.

According to the latest data:

- Overall wholesale values declined 0.69% for the week, following a 0.72% decline the previous week.
- Truck and SUV values fell 0.77%, or approximately $152.
- Car values declined 0.45%, or approximately $77.
- Two- to eight-year-old full-size crossovers fell 1.35%.
- Two- to eight-year-old full-size pickups declined 1.21%.
- Auction conversion slipped to 58%.

Those averages describe the market direction. They do not describe the value of a specific VIN.

Condition, mileage, equipment, color, history, recon exposure, and local retail fit are creating a wider spread between vehicles that appear comparable in a guidebook.

**PPO interpretation:** The wholesale market may be declining, but the best vehicles are not becoming equally cheaper. The discount is concentrating in the inventory buyers are increasingly willing to pass.

## “Close enough” is becoming an expensive acquisition strategy

A vehicle may be close enough to the desired model, mileage, or trim and still be wrong for the store.

The mistakes usually sound reasonable at the moment of purchase:

- The mileage is a little high, but the price is attractive.
- The trim is not ideal, but the model sells well.
- The history is not perfect, but the spread should cover it.
- The tires and brakes are weak, but recon can handle them.
- The color is slow locally, but the market report looks healthy.
- The equipment is light, but it is still priced below market.

Each compromise may look manageable in isolation. Combined, they can create a vehicle that requires more recon, a lower retail price, and more time to sell.

When buyers have limited options, the market may forgive those compromises. When supply improves, the cleaner alternative becomes the comparison vehicle—and the average unit must compete through price.

## The new question is not “How far below MMR?”

A declining market can tempt buyers to focus on apparent discounts. But a vehicle is not attractive simply because it can be purchased below yesterday’s reference point.

The better question is:

**Does the acquisition price compensate the store for every reason this vehicle is less desirable than the next available alternative?**

That requires more than a guidebook comparison.

Before bidding, evaluate:

- **Market scarcity:** How many true substitutes are available in the relevant radius and price band?
- **Condition:** What work is required before the vehicle can compete with the clean examples?
- **Configuration:** Does the trim, drivetrain, equipment, and color match local demand?
- **History:** What discount will the next buyer expect for an accident, rental history, or multiple owners?
- **Financeability:** Does the projected retail price land inside a payment band the store can fund?
- **Store performance:** How have comparable vehicles actually performed here?
- **Exit value:** If the retail thesis fails, what is the likely net wholesale result after fees and transportation?

This is **Capital Posture Before Velocity**. The goal is not to buy more quickly because values are falling. It is to deploy capital where the vehicle-specific risk and expected return still align.

## Scarcity matters more when supply improves

It may seem counterintuitive, but improving supply makes [**Scarcity Before Price**](https://www.profitablepre-owned.com/blog/ppo-buy-rule-1-scarcity-before-price-2026-buying-strategy) more important—not less.

When buyers have more choices, generic inventory becomes easier to replace. Vehicles with a real reason to win retain stronger demand:

- A scarce trim or drivetrain
- A hard-to-find affordable price point
- Clean history and below-market mileage
- The equipment customers repeatedly search for
- A configuration the store has proven it can sell
- A financeable payment position
- Condition that shortens time to frontline

A lower wholesale market does not automatically make common inventory scarce. It may simply make it cheaper.

Price creates an opportunity only when demand, replacement difficulty, and execution support the vehicle after acquisition.

## A five-part “not close enough” auction test

Before approving the next auction buy, require five answers:

### 1. What makes this exact vehicle retail-ready?

Do not answer with the model name. Identify the condition, mileage, configuration and history that allow this VIN to compete immediately.

### 2. What compromise is embedded in the price?

If the vehicle is cheaper, document why. The discount may be paying for recon, history, mileage, weak equipment or lower retail demand. If the reason is unclear, the “deal” is not yet understood.

### 3. What will the vehicle cost on the frontline?

Add the acquisition price, auction fees, transportation, realistic recon, pack and certification. Compare the all-in cost—not the hammer price—with the expected retail result.

### 4. What evidence supports the retail thesis?

Use local market days supply, price-to-market, lead activity, store sales history and financeability. A broad segment trend is not enough to justify a VIN-level decision.

### 5. What is the exit trigger?

Set the review date, reposition action and wholesale trigger before the vehicle is purchased. If the original condition, demand or gross assumption fails, management should already know the next move.

## What used-car managers should do now

1. **Tighten condition adjustments.** Update recon assumptions using recent actual repair orders, not round-number estimates.
2. **Separate averages from outliers.** Review clean, average and rough vehicles independently instead of applying one segment adjustment.
3. **Audit the comp set.** Eliminate vehicles with materially different history, equipment, mileage or drivetrain.
4. **Track conversion by quality.** Watch which vehicles sell on the first run and which require repeated exposure or seller concessions.
5. **Review middle-aged trucks and SUVs.** The latest declines are concentrated enough to require model- and age-specific scrutiny.
6. **Protect affordable scarcity.** Older financeable vehicles may remain difficult to replace even while late-model supply expands.
7. **Require a written retail thesis.** Every meaningful compromise should produce a corresponding valuation adjustment.

## The operating rule

The market is offering buyers more choices. That does not mean every vehicle is becoming a better buy.

The clean, well-equipped and retail-ready units may continue to receive strong support. The apparent bargains will increasingly be the vehicles carrying condition, configuration or demand problems that the market has already recognized.

**Do not buy the segment. Buy the VIN.**

The wholesale market is no longer rewarding “close enough.” Your appraisal process should not reward it either.
