How Voltest, Recurrent, Midtronics and Lyteflo compare for used-EV appraisals, battery reports and VDP merchandising
The used-EV market does not only have a pricing problem. It has a proof problem.
A shopper can see the mileage, vehicle history, equipment and asking price. But the most expensive and least understood component—the high-voltage battery—is usually reduced to a dashboard range estimate or a salesperson’s reassurance that it “checks out.”
That is not enough for a buyer who knows an out-of-warranty battery repair could be expensive.
Dealers need a repeatable way to evaluate battery condition during appraisal, use the result in the buy decision and then display understandable battery information on the vehicle detail page. The goal is not to make every used EV look perfect. The goal is to replace uncertainty with evidence.
The PPO verdict: Voltest currently provides the most direct appraisal-to-VDP workflow of the tools reviewed. Recurrent is the strongest consumer-education and real-world range layer. Midtronics is the strongest service-department platform, but it is not primarily a retail VDP certificate. Lyteflo may become the most complete EV merchandising suite, but dealers should verify the present availability of its battery-report product before signing a contract.

Cox Automotive raised its 2026 U.S. used-retail sales forecast to 20.4 million vehicles. Cox does not publish a national dealer retail-gross forecast by fuel type, so PPO built the following scenario by applying multiple dealer group’s fuel mix and gross-per-retail-unit results to Cox’s national volume forecast.

In the source dealer data, EVs represented 1,315 retail sales and were projected down 21.2% year over year. Yet they still generated approximately $4.1 million in total gross, with average front gross of $1,464, back gross of $1,690 and total gross PVR of $3,154.
That is the important operating point. EV volume can be under pressure while individual EV transactions still produce meaningful gross. The risk is not simply that an EV will make less money. The greater risk is acquiring the wrong unit, discovering battery concerns after purchase or allowing an otherwise good unit to age because the VDP does not answer the buyer’s biggest question.
This is a PPO scenario, not a Cox Automotive fuel-type or gross-profit forecast.
The projection is useful for sizing the opportunity. It should not be treated as a precise industry forecast.
Cox Automotive’s consumer-and-dealer research found that 81% of consumers were very or somewhat interested in a stand-alone battery-health report, while 63% of dealers were only slightly familiar or not familiar at all with battery diagnostic tools. That creates an information gap dealers can close.
Cox also found in an earlier Manheim battery-health pilot that higher battery-health scores were associated with 1% to 4% higher wholesale transaction prices, averaging 2.4%. That finding does not guarantee an equivalent retail-gross increase. It does show that the market can assign value to credible, VIN-specific battery information.
A battery report can help at three points in the inventory cycle:
A battery certificate will not rescue a poorly bought or overpriced EV. It can, however, keep a good unit from being treated like an unknown one.
Do not buy a system only because it produces an attractive badge. Ask what data supports the badge and how the result enters the retail workflow.

Voltest is the most direct fit for the use case PPO set out to solve. Its professional kit connects through the vehicle’s OBD2 port, pulls available battery-management-system data and produces a customer-friendly report. Voltest advertises a test time of approximately two minutes and includes metrics such as state of health, charge cycles and cell imbalance when supported by the vehicle.
The retail advantage is that the result does not have to remain in a service file. Voltest offers SRP and VDP integrations that can display battery health, estimated range, charging information, warranty status and test-backed insights on the listing.
The professional kit was publicly listed at $429, but report generation and dealer integrations require an active subscription with dealer-specific pricing.
PPO assessment: The best current match for dealers that want battery information to influence both the appraisal and the customer-facing listing.
Review Voltest’s dealer product
Best for: Dealers that want to make the EV VDP easier for a shopper to understand.
Recurrent approaches the problem through connected-vehicle and real-world data. Its dealer module can display realistic range, expected future range, charging time and ownership-cost comparisons. Recurrent says the module can be added to a dealer website with one line of code and supports most major EV and plug-in-hybrid brands.
For vehicle owners, Recurrent connects to supported vehicles through active connected-services accounts and analyzes multiple readings over time. That makes it different from a quick OBD appraisal tool. Recurrent is strongest when the dealer’s primary objective is consumer education and the reduction of range and charging uncertainty.
PPO assessment: The strongest complementary VDP tool in this review. Dealers may pair it with a fast physical appraisal test when they need immediate acquisition decisions.

Best for: Franchise dealers, large groups and EV service operations that need technician-level high-voltage battery diagnostics, module work, balancing, depowering or rescue charging.
Midtronics is a major battery-service equipment company with a broad xEV product line. Its tools include systems for high-voltage pack service, module balancing, depowering and rescue charging, with data-management capabilities through its BMIS platform.
That makes Midtronics highly relevant to EV readiness—but it is not a direct substitute for Voltest or Recurrent. The core Midtronics value proposition is safe, technician-led diagnosis and service. A dealer considering Midtronics should begin with the service operation it needs to perform, the OEM requirements involved and the training and safety processes required.
PPO assessment: The best service-department choice among the companies reviewed, but not the best standalone answer for a two-minute trade appraisal and consumer-facing VDP certificate.

Best for: Dealers that want battery information combined with EV range, charging, incentives, fuel savings and ownership-cost merchandising.
Lyteflo’s broader value proposition is compelling. Its platform is designed to turn a standard vehicle detail page into an EV-specific shopping experience. Public product information describes fuel and maintenance savings, incentives, charging information, EV attributes and personalized ownership reports.
Lyteflo also describes a Quick Battery Test that uses an OBD2 device and produces remaining capacity, estimated useful life and real-world range information. However, the same public site repeatedly labels its Certified Battery Reports as “Coming soon.” Dealers should therefore verify which battery-testing features are commercially live, which vehicles are supported and whether a production VDP integration is available before making a selection.
PPO assessment: Potentially the most complete all-in-one merchandising platform, but the battery-report availability needs to be confirmed before PPO can rank it as the best current testing solution.

The right answer depends on where the dealership’s confidence gap exists.
For many stores, the best solution may be a two-layer stack: one tool for immediate appraisal and battery proof, plus another layer for richer consumer education on the VDP.
A tool only creates value when it changes the operating process.
Run the battery test before the used-car manager commits to the number whenever the VIN is supported. If the test cannot be completed, treat the missing information as an appraisal risk—not as proof that the battery is bad.

The exact calculation varies by vehicle and testing provider, so dealers should ask whether the result is directly reported by the vehicle, calculated from BMS data or modeled from other inputs.
